WATER CONSERVATION Evaporative cooling towers provide cooling by evaporating part of the re-circulated process water flow used to cool the air conditioning condenser. Approximately 1000 BTUs are required to evaporate 0.12 gallons of water. Every tower ton which is 15,000 BTUs will require approximately 1.8 gallons of water evaporation or 0.03 gpm/ton. As water evaporates in a cooling tower, the water vapor will enter the atmosphere; the dissolved solids remain behind in the cooling tower system and build up in concentration in the system. Most water treatment systems will control this concentration of dissolved solids by bleeding or discharging water from the high dissolved solids concentration in the water. This discharged water is replaced by fresh city water that has a much lower dissolved solids concentration. This blowdown that is bled off by the water treatment system is usually less than or equal to the amount of water that evaporates. |
Chemicals are usually added to control scale, corrosion, and microbiological growth in the cooling tower water. The main purpose of chemical treatment is to maximize the number of cycles of water use for savings, or all systems would simply be single-pass use. As the system bleeds the high dissolved solids, the chemicals and water are discharged into the sewer, while new chemicals are re-injected back into the system on a continuous basis. This method is very wasteful and inefficient, as well as, being harmful to the environment. "The United States as a nation possesses abundant water resources and has developed and used those resources extensively. The future health and economic welfare of the nation's population are dependent upon a continuing supply of fresh, uncontaminated water. Many existing sources of water are being stressed by withdrawals to meet off-stream needs, along with increasing instream-flow requirements to meet human and environmental needs. Recent drought in some areas has accentuated the need to balance water demand with available supply". Source - USGS Problem Statement. The image below shows water withdrawals in the United States. |
| Now with the use of eH2O water treatment, the dissolved minerals are precipitated from the water system, and these precipitated minerals are benign to your heat exchange devices. When the dissolved minerals enter the Tri-Tron treatment chamber or flow cell, the pulsed powered energy in this cell will created a bulk precipitation of calcium carbonate crystals. These minerals will start out as very fine crystals and bond together into larger conglomerates to be removed with filtration. This conglomeration also encapsulates bacteria and other organics in the water so the water clarity with filtration is remarkable while providing microbiological control. The energy itself disrupts bacteria so they cannot reproduce for added microbiological control. Ultraviolet purification is provided for a third mechanism for microbiological control to obtain unparalleled results. This is also an accepted practice for Legionella control. | ![]() |
